Michele Kelly, July 2019 Thug of the Month

Our July Thug of the Month was nominated by her friend Austen Stutsman. With their permission we would like to share her story with you as seen through the eyes of just one of her supporters.

“I nominated her because her attitude and unflagging efforts are truly an inspiration.

A year or so ago, Michele experienced some challenges that threatened her career. It was a long battle and throughout the process, Michele has shown grace, determination, and a work ethic that is rarely seen. I continue to be impressed by her positivity and perseverance, well after the issue was resolved. She never gave into the desire to gossip, or the anger that I know went along with that process.

Michele flew across the country in 2017 to participate in Women in Fire. Partially to promote training, and partially to find a group of supportive women. Since then, she came out again in 2018 to be a crew leader at Camp Blaze. As a first time Crew Leader, she won distinction in the care and thoughtfulness with which she guided the girls. For example, she spent almost every night with one of the campers to get her more comfortable with wearing her SCBA masks. When the other crew leaders were getting ready to fall into bed after a long day, she was working with her camper. With Michele by her side, the camper was able to complete search and rescue drills with an SCBA. She even participated in live fire. It’s difficult to express in words how impactful of a change this was for that particular camper. I can say without a doubt that Michele single-handedly changed that girl’s life.

I got the opportunity to see her skills in action at the I-women conference a few years ago. She was consistently performing at a high level. In addition, she was willing to jump in and help others who had questions or needed more hands-on help. She does it with patience and a humble spirit.

She truly is someone that I am proud to know and lucky to call a friend.”

We would like to thank Michele for choosing to do what is right and not just what is convenient. Your choice to put the needs of others before your own has left a lasting mark on those you come into contact with. It is our desire to ensure you know that your actions are making a difference and it is our honor to recognize you as a Plug Thug!
